# A collection of professional examples
The folders and pages in this section are a few things. Some are examples and highlights of the various projects that I have contributed to and/or led. Some are collections of individual and collaborative presentations. Some are examples of how I organize and provide leadership. And some address what I consider the root of my career, *designing for learning*. All together, **this section is a portfolio and a story**.
> [!info]+ Some notes on this section
> 1. I consider the beginning of my career in 2003. I had completed my undergraduate degree at the end of 2002 and began my path by teaching K-8 in the middle of China. The next year I taught 9-12, and the 2 years after I taught undergraduate students. I also taught teachers during the summer. Later in 2008, I began my doctoral studies in **Instructional Technology**.
> 2. This section has its limitations. I have given many examples and tried to tell a simple story of each for context. But full courses, modules, and activities I cannot show as they do not belong to me.
## Building community
This sub-section highlights some examples of building community. Community is essential, and its relationship to teaching, learning, and research is fundamental. Across my professional life I have sought to be a part of communities where I can learn, where I can make contributions, and where some action can be formulated to provide a service.
Note: For additional insight, please see [[CV#Leadership and service]] and my [[teaching philosophy]] and [[research statement]].
## Creations and contributions
This sub-section provides a **collection of work examples**. These have all added meaningful value to the organizations I was a part of. As much as I am proud of them, I look back at them and want to make them better. Examples of work provided in this section come from my time teaching in China, teaching at Texas Tech University, and working at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and at George Washington University (GWU).
## Design for learning
This sub-section provides background to the overall experience I have had working with different teams over my career. I highlight some creations during my time teaching in China (2003-2007) and with pre-service teachers at Texas Tech University (2009-2013). However, more information about these experiences is included in section 6. (Go to [[about section 6]] to start.) I also describe some bits about my experience contributing to and leading teams.
## Leadership and management
This sub-section provides insight into my leadership style. Here I describe a bit about my philosophy and what inspires me in leadership. I show examples highlighting the importance I place on *[[making work visible]]* and I delve into various tools I use to manage effective team operations. Some examples are provided of systems I have created to effectively manage both projects and people.
## Talks and presentations
This sub-section provides details of various presentations and discussions that I have led or co-led, including showing embedded versions of slide decks. Each of these were invited sessions. In most cases, I designed the content, but strived to deliver them with a partner from a different domain to increase engagement and buy-in beyond the session.
Note: For additional insight, please see [[CV#Presentations and panels]].
## Workshops
This sub-section provides details of various presentations and discussions that I have led or co-led, including providing embedded slide decks. These are artifacts of educational programming I designed to either advance digital fluency and/or generative Artificial Intelligence (genAI) literacy. In a few cases, I partnered with other staff to leverage their expertise and increase awareness of support offered by my department.
Note: For additional insight, please see [[CV#Workshops]].
