#multimedia-production > [!summary]+ Summary > In this page I write about one of my favorite educational videos of all-time. This one has always stood out to me as a model of sorts. Please see my page on [[multimedia production]] for insight into my thoughts on the value of this work it people who do it. # "Autopilot in Action" by KLM One of my favorite educational videos of all time is KLM’s _“Autopilot in Action”_ (2015), part of the “Cockpit Tales” series. It’s an exceptional example of how multimedia can teach complex concepts in an engaging, clear, and authentic way. <div class="video-container"> <iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/9NFq2eZSDJE?si=TdTXpwLROIb_oFF9" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen> </iframe> </div> In addition to being a great use of multimedia for teaching and learning, this video is just *slick*. Here are some of the things I love about it. 1. **Soundtrack**: Uplifting, energetic, and encouraging. 2. **Clear story**: Walks through a pilots journey step-by-step. 3. **Graphics**: Simple, informative, guiding, and aligned with KLM's brand colors. 4. **Authentic footage**: Real stock footage adding credibility and prevents staleness. 5. **Visual explanations**: Tools and processes are clearly described for novices; strong connection with simple graphics. 6. **Social presence**: Highlights the people and roles involved, reinforcing authenticity. 7. **Key moments**: - 00:00:42 to 00:01:30 — Flight Management Computer (FMC) - 00:01:39 to 00:01:53 — Cost index and relation to FMC - 00:02:13 to 00:02:38 — Taxiing process - 00:03:27 to 00:03:45 — Autopilot updates - 00:04:46 — Animated landing graphic - 00:06:44 — Instrument Landing System (ILS) ## My experience producing at this level Producing a video like this comes with unique challenges. The people are key and from my experience, success requires care, skill, and commitment: - **Commitment to quality:** Many productions focus on simply completing a project, but it’s critical to consider what the video communicates about the team, brand, and long-term value. - **Access:** Gaining permission and access to real working spaces can be difficult, but it’s essential for authenticity. - **People commitment:** The right producer needs pride in their work and a desire to grow their skills. Assigning someone invested in the project makes a meaningful difference.
