> [!summary]+ Summary > This page describes the history, purpose, and value of the original genAI website created by the Strategic Digital Learning Initiatives unit of GW-LAI. Along with a site map, archived images of webpages are provided. # GW-LAI SDLI website design During my 5 years as Director of Strategic Digital Learning Initiatives at the George Washington University (GWU), I/we went through a number of changes. These included an expansion in mission, a revision in work practices, and a focus on improving joint team collaborations. A root change however, was a mission to use team knowledge and skills to directly impact faculty by creating programs and resources to improve thei digital and Artificial Intelligence (AI) skills. Key to communicating who we were and what we were doing was our website. From 2021-2024 I created a series of public webpages and content to communicate about who we were, what we were working on, and importantly, to provide educational materials to the GWU community at-large. Since my departure in mid-2025 this website has changed as would be expected. But I'm proud to have established the website and planted multiple seeds for some great content to help the community. ## genAI website map (2021-2024) The following outlines the website structure that I created for my unit. Level 1 introduced the team and how Multimedia Producers were available as digital experts to guide online course multimedia design and production. Furthermore, it described our support to faculty in their use of Adobe Creative Cloud tools, and how we were the library team focused on building community and resources to support generative Artificial Intelligence (genAI) in teaching and learning. The subsequent levels then address our core functions: 1) designing and producing digital media for online courses; 2) genAI programming and resources; and 3) supporting digital media and skills in teaching. ``` L1: Teaching with Creative and genAI Technologies – About Digital and AI Literacy – Partner with Us L2: Designing Digital Media – Creating Media Content – Online Course Media – Non-course Media – Consultations in Creative Media L2: Generative Artificial Intelligence (genAI) – About GAI – Conceptualizing genAI in teaching – GW guidelines for using genAI – LAI genAI Faculty Advisory Group – Presentations and consultations on genAI L3-1: GW events on genAI – LAI presentations and discussions – CCAS A.I. and the Humanities Seminar Series L3-2: Micro-learning: Getting started with genAI L3-3: Highlighting Faculty and Staff Leaning into genAI – Integrating generative AI into teaching practice – Student engagement and learning with genAI – Addressing ethics and academic integrity – Streamlining workflows – Future possibilities and innovations L3-4: Planning to teach with genAI – Activities in learning design – Steps to reimagine your pedagogy L3-4-1: Challenges to keep in mind L3-4-2: genAI tools to explore L3-5: Resources for genAI in teaching – Created by GW staff – Created by GW faculty – External to GW L2: Transforming Teaching with Media – Utilizing Creative Tools to Enhance Teaching – Digital Fluency Initiatives – Partnering in Creative Media L3: GW-Adobe Science Education Initiative - 2022-Spring, Olga D. - 2022-Spring, Michael M. - 2022-Spring, LaKeisha M. - 2023-Spring, Hurriyet O. ``` ## In-focus: "L2: Generative Artificial Intelligence (genAI)" > [!warning]- genAI LAI present site > If you are curious about the present genAI site at GW-LAI you can find it [here](https://library.gwu.edu/generative-ai). Note, this site has changed significantly with a combination of department reorganization and narrowing vision. As these pages were built from 2023-2024, I was attempting to address multiple interests. For example, some key interests were as follows: 1. **Faculty wanted guidance and training from the central library.** - In response I worked with my team and faculty to create a series of micro-learning videos, highlight what some faculty were doing, and reached out to staff across teams to build resources with me. While not demonstrated on this part of the library website, I put together and advertised a whole series of genAI workshops too. 2. **Staff wanted to contribute through storytelling.** - This aligned well with faculty needs, so a video series on 'getting-started' was pursued, as was a video series highlighting faculty genAI use. 3. **Faculty and staff wanted general resources.** - It is common for staff teams in higher-education to gather resources, but not as common for them to create resources. I wanted to encourage and lead the creation of genAI resources out of GW. Along with providing help, I also wanted begin to define a visual brand to help demonstrate our quality. (I wanted to stop distributing a series of Word and/or Google documents.) 4. **The entire GWU community needed a place to find genAI guidance.** - genAI was and is highly controversial in most higher-education circles. But there are faculty, staff, and students who want to know of a place and group to gather guidance. In the midst of disruption, I was happy to take the risk and try to build that place. ### Generative Artificial Intelligence (genAI) **[ARCHIVE, PNG screenshot](https://1drv.ms/i/c/13829E5D2EB238DE/EVer-9-wJ7BAkVITCywCS2IBiu0bxzC5kksCVFw3YXkC3g?e=w67puu)** Description: This page described how the team conceptualized genAI in teaching, provided some background information and link to the genAI guidelines from the Provost's office, and introduced the LAI genAI Faculty Advisory Council/Group (later renamed Generative AI in Teaching). For more information, please see this page: [[genAI Faculty Advisory Council]] ### GW events on genAI **[ARCHIVE, PNG screenshot](https://1drv.ms/i/c/13829E5D2EB238DE/EZjV4BinDHFAqH3xN--GZz4BGbY3xy6pNSqBl3sfIjxELA?e=LM4xPv)** Description: This page provided in-house produced videos of various genAI related events and seminars. The idea was to model it off of the [Stanford HAI videos on YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/@stanfordhai). However, I was not allowed to build a YouTube site. ### Micro-learning: Getting started with genAI (videos) **[ARCHIVE, PNG screenshot](https://1drv.ms/i/c/13829E5D2EB238DE/Ee0fLnr-SC1PkpExXcHCw-kB0rTeoxVbfyKQxpGJ80TuJw?e=O0xBdh)** Description: This page introduced a micro-learning video series. In total there were 30 planned videos. These were all decided with a small group of faculty who were equally interested in providing their colleagues with some simple examples of using genAI in common teaching and research tasks. For more information, please see this page: [[2024, Getting started with genAI (video)]] #### Teaching and course design Description: The videos in this section identify and demonstrate ways that generative artificial intelligence (genAl) can be used to help get started accomplishing various teaching and course design tasks. - Video: *How can genAI help me redesign my syllabus?* - Video: *How can genAI help me streamline my syllabus?* - Video: *How can genAI help me create grading rubrics?* - Video: *How can genAI help me generate exam questions and large question pools?* - Video: *How can genAI be used to ask me questions and help me clarify my thinking?* #### Resource creation and visualization Description: The videos in this section demonstrate ways that generative artificial intelligence (genAl) can be used to help create different kinds of visuals. - Video: *How can genAI help me create data visualizations graphs, concept maps and flowcharts* #### Research and professional development Description: The videos in this section highlight ways that generative Artificial Intelligence (genAl) can be used in research practice. - Planned but unable to develop with departmental changes. #### Student engagement and critical thinking Description: The videos in this section highlight ways that generative Artificial Intelligence (genAl) can be used for engaging with students. - Video: *How to use genAI for gathering alternative perspectives to an issue or problem?* - Video: *How can genAI be used to ask me questions and help me clarify my thinking?
