# Contribution to genAI guidance at GWU
Early and mid 2023 were defined for me as a time highly focused to the impact of generative Artificial Intelligence (genAI) on George Washington University (GWU) faculty and staff. Everyday I was meeting with someone on this topic, doing research, and formulating a plan of action for the central library.
During this time I was invited to contribute to one of the first organized efforts out of the GWU Faculty Senate to help the faculty begin to conceptualize what this new technology meant for us. Working with many faculty and a few staff, I helped compile information on genAI, discussed what I thought it would mean for teaching, and provided actions that I planned to take in support of *reimagining teaching and learning with genAI*.
## GWU Faculty Senate Standing Committee on Education, Policy, and Technology (EPT)
The goal/mission of EPT is to work "*jointly and collaboratively with the University Administration on the formulation, development, modification, or implementation of policies and procedures involving technology as it relates to the educational mission of the University.*" As a director in the central library creating and guiding efforts to support faculty with advanced technology and pedagogy, this was a key committee for me.
I was a member of the [Faculty Senate EPT Committee](https://facultysenate.gwu.edu/committees/educational-policy) from December 2022 to June 2025. In that time I attended monthly meetings and contributed to discussions on digital fluency, generative Artificial Intelligence (genAI) literacy, and reported on work that my department was undertaking to support teaching and learning at the university.
> [!note]- My department name an purpose
> From the time I started in July 2020 to December 2024, my department was named the **Instructional Core**. The purpose of the department was to support university teaching and learning via Faculty Development, Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, and Strategic Digital Learning Initiatives. I oversaw the final listed unit. Mine cut across all units. In January 2025, the name changed to the **Center for Teaching Excellence** and the mission continued to be teaching and learning.
### genAI sub-committee
The EPT sub-committee on generative artificial intelligence met monthly from June 2023 to May 2024. It was created to draft some general information and recommendations regarding genAI at the university. At that time, the technology was brand new and both faculty and staff did not know how to respond to it or what the expectations for responding to it may be. In fact, only the month before I had produced the first draft of the genAI strategy for the central library response to genAI and support of the community.
I was invited to join this committee along with a cross-cutting group of university faculty and staff. Together, our objective was to compile information and write about various genAI topics of high-interest. This work was meant to **expound on and support** the April 2023 genAI guidelines from the GWU Provost's Office. Those guidelines are entitled, "*Guidelines for Using Generative Artificial Intelligence in Connection with Academic Work*". (Links to this 1st set of guidelines are provided in the **References** section.)
### genAI white paper
Below is the final version of the document with the full EPT committee and with University Administration in October 2023. Page 24 outlines my plans of what to deliver to the university community. These include the following:
1. A series of **genAI webpages** on the central library website
- Refer to: [[2021-2024, SDLI Website#In-focus "L2 Generative Artificial Intelligence (genAI)"]]
2. A series of **genAI micro-learning** series
- Refer to: [[2024, Getting started with genAI (video)]]
3. A series of **faculty focused case studies**
- Refer to: [[2024, Faculty integrating genAI (video)]]
4. A series of **genAI workshops**
- Refer to: A full set of workshops and listed in this section "professional achievements > workshops > genAI (2023-2024)".
5. A series of **genAI resources** for the university
- Refer to: [[2021-2024, SDLI Website#Resources for genAI in teaching]]
6. A series of **genAI symposiums**
- Note: The original idea was to create a series of genAI and teaching focused sessions from the central library. Due to a limitation in resources, I decided to focus on supporting faculty who were arranging genAI symposiums such as the "CCAS A.I. and Humanities" series.
7. A series of **staff seminars**
- Refer to: [[2023, genAI Staff Design Partners]] and [[genAI Staff Working Group]]
- Note: This work did not go further than the listed items due to available resources and shifting priorities.

This document was completed in August 2023 and then presented to the full EPT committee in October 2023. Prior to its completion, the sub-committee chair and co-chairs of the full EPT committee shared bits of the drafted information with the Provost's Office in light of the fall 2023 semester starting in late August. This led to the production of the Provost's 2nd set of guidance on genAI entitled, "*Additional Guidance Regarding Generative Artificial Intelligence at the George Washington University*".
