# Generative Artificial Intelligence (genAI) design workflow integration
As I discuss in my [[genAI]] page, I am a genAI **optimist** and believe in **using it to evolve what we do**. While at George Washington University (GWU), I oversaw a creative team with a primary focus on designing and delivering multimedia for online courses. As part of my continual efforts to make the team more effective, including upskilling and project ownership, I wanted to explore integrating genAI into our workflow. Ideally, this could help by giving the team an opportunity to learn new skills and open up more space for them to contribute to other projects and initiatives. In my eyes, genAI was a potential co-worker and partner that I could not get with an FTE.
## Mapping genAI multimedia workflow integration
In the fall of 2023, my team and I got together one afternoon to map out our workflow and identify where genAI may best fit. This was the perfect activity for taking something already existing in our minds and making it visible. Fortunately our project management system had been long established, so our conversation could focus on genAI task partnership and potential task off-loading. (See [[GWU Project management]].)
### Collaborative team design
This first step we did over 2 days. Potential places where we identified genAI use was denoted with `*GAI`. The left-side before the branch, captured steps of collaborative work with Instructional Designer and faculty. The branch highlighted to 4 paths multimedia design could take — 1) media refresh with existing scripts, 2) media creation with existing scripts, 3) no scripts and no media, and 4) a new heavily assisted genAI path.

Things were moved and edited as we worked on it. And after we completed this outline I invited Instructional Designer partners to sit with us and walk through. Part of that was to also get them thinking about integrating genAI into their work because everyone doing so would increase productivity.
### Final diagrammed plan
The whiteboard image was used to create the final diagram below. Places where I encouraged genAI use were highlighted with a red box behind a block denoting action. Other action blocks were made red because they indicated genAI assistance would be done.

## 🎯 Results
This activity promoted collaboration within my team and allowed us to critically think about and discuss where generative Artificial Intelligence (genAI) could be used to help our workflow. Once we established the tracks of our work and knew where we could best use genAI, we were able to identify specific tools and experiment with their use. This led to a series of team presentations and adoption of genAI in the workflow.
