# genAI for Personalized Student Learning
**Delivery details:**
Date: Fall 2023, Spring 2024, and Fall 2024
Target audience: University faculty and staff
Delivery format: Remote/Zoom
Duration: 60 minutes
## About the workshop
This workshop was the first in a series of generative Artificial Intelligence (genAI) focused workshops I created from 2023 to 2025. It was also one of many joint partnerships with Educational/Faculty Developers. Early on with the emergence of genAI I became highly curious in how the technology may lead to *real* **personalized learning**. Prior to this personalized learning had been driven by often impractical ideas of one instructor customizing content for individual students. They would try to do this given data provided from a learning management system, assessments, observations, etc. My partners and I wanted to demonstrate how genAI may be used by students to personalize their learning experience, as well as how instructors could plan for that. This also involved addressing what genAI is, what kinds of genAI are available, and recommendations for what to think about as an instructor.
### Description
> In this workshop we will address how generative Artificial Intelligence (genAI) offers a new take on personalized student learning. Unlike years past where personalized learning involved big IT systems and instructors tailoring plans for individuals, genAI provides students with opportunities to learn in their own way. Along with discussion, we will highlight strategies and tools students can use with genAI to learn, including demonstrations using various prompts. This workshop is at the introductory level and assumes no prior knowledge.
### Learning objectives
1. Use generative Artificial Intelligence (genAI) to create personalized learning experiences for students.
2. Examine the use of genAI in personalized learning from the student perspective.
3. Develop strategies for writing detailed prompts to receive helpful outputs from genAI tools.
### Workshop goal
**The goal was to introduce participants to concepts for using genAI to create a personalized learning experiences.** We wanted to explore what could be done with it, as well as laying some groundwork for discussion on what it is — a partner/collaborator, assistant, or tool. (This was ultimately explored in the workshops "[[2024, Tool or partner]]" and "[[2024, Learning partnership]]".)

## 🎯 Results
This workshop was repeated multiple times and became a foundation for viewing genAI as a personal tool. Participants reported having a good sense of where to start with genAI and returned for further guidance after each session. Participation consistently averaged around 15, which was well above the department’s typical workshop attendance.
