> [!summary]+ Summary > This page explains a workshop designed to address genAI from a perspective as a creative partner. In acknowledging all of the disruption that genAI brought to creative work, this workshop gave participants – such as faculty with creative interest – an opportunity to see how they may apply genAI in multimedia design and production. (See the bottom of this page for the results of this workshop.) # Storytelling and Media Design with genAI **Delivery details:** Date: Spring 2024 and Fall 2024 Target audience: University faculty, staff, and students Delivery format: Remote/Zoom Duration: 60 minutes ## About the workshop This workshop addressed a role for generative Artificial Intelligence (genAI) in multimedia design and production. With content contributions from multimedia producers, the workshop introduced examples of how genAI is/was a disruptive force, how genAI could fit into the storytelling process, and provided some examples of working with genAI. To give this a bit of context, a section was added that highlighted how my team approached multimedia design and discussed where we were trying to add genAI into our process. (Admittedly, at the time of the workshop, building genAI into the workflows as a work in progress.) Some examples of how my team was attempting to use genAI were presented in this workshop and were based on making decisions about genAI as a producer, interviewer, or collaborator. ### Description > In this workshop, we will guide you through a process of independently preparing to tell a digital story will multimedia in partnership with generative Artificial Intelligence (genAI). A framework will be introduced that provides guidance on how to structure a story and we will go through a series of steps collaborating with genAI to create a story outline, a draft script, and a storyboard (with visuals) that brings the narrative to life. This session aims to empower faculty to independently draft the design of educational media. This workshop is introductory, some experience in media design or production may be beneficial. ### Learning objectives 1. Define the creative relationship between humans and generative Artificial Intelligence (genAI). 2. Compare and contrast the instructor and media producer perspective and provide strategies for how each can work with genAI. 3. Demonstrate examples of working with genAI to tell stories and design media. ### Workshop goal **The goal was for participants to demonstrate and allow opportunities for working with AI as a creative partner.** Participants were able to see the range of available AI tools/services and discuss how humans and AI may work together. Then with context from practices of a creative team, participants could see and try some of this partnership. ## Slide deck

*Note: These slides were built with a custom slide deck that I made using Microsoft PowerPoint. Generative Artificial Intelligence (genAI) was used to create an image of a child on slide 19; and other images on slides 27, 28, 29, and 30. Participants gained a concept of partnership, placement of genAI in a creative workflow, and roles that genAI could be. Participants reported enjoying how this workshop opened their eyes to creative possibilities. ## Resources - Contreras, B. and Licari, K. *[Can you tell which script was written by AI?](https://www.latimes.com/projects/writers-strike-deal-ai/)* Los Angeles Times.
